Biography

Hiroo Sono is Professor of Law of Hokkaido University Law School, Japan.
His main fields of research interest are contract law, international commercial law, and harmonization of private law. He has published extensively in Japanese and English in these fields. A significant part of his work relates to the CISG.
He has been one of the founding members of the CISG Advisory Council (CISG-AC) since 2001 and the Global Private Law Forum (GPLF) of Japan since 2014.

From 2006 to 2008, he served as Counsellor at the Civil Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Justice, where he was responsible for Japan’s accession to the CISG. He also contributed as an expert to the drafting of the “HCCH/UNIDROIT/UNCITRAL Legal Guide to Uniform Legal Instruments in the Area of International Commercial Contracts (with a Focus on Sales)” (2020) and the UNCITRAL Digest of Case Law on the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (2011).

In fields other than the CISG, he served as the Japanese delegate to UNCITRAL Working Group VI (Security Interests) (2008-2018); a member of the UNIDROIT Working Group for the Model Law on Warehouse Receipts (2020-2024); and the Japanese delegate to UNCITRAL Working Group I (Warehouse Receipts) (2023-2024). He is also a Correspondent to UNIDROIT since 2015.
